by Jeffry on April 21, 2010

Most of the Android phones are still running an outdated firmware 1.5 or 2.0 and they all are anxiously awaiting the upgrade from 2.0 to 2.1. In spite of these facts, there are speculations that the next version of Android 2.2 (Froyo) will be available soon, probably during Google I/O event which is scheduled to start on May 19th. It is also being reported that Google has already started testing Android 2.2 firmware and might be ported initially on Nexus One.

Additional sources also confirmed that Android 2.2 is currently being tested. What features are expected out of Froyo? Let’s have a quick snapshot on android 2.2 feature list.

Features for Android 2.2 Froyo [Rumored]:

  • JIT compiler
  • Free additional RAM
  • OpenGL ES 2.0 enhancements
  • Flash 10.1 support
  • Fixed problem with “crazy screen” / Resolution of cross multitouch
  • Activation of Color Trackball
  • Enable FM radio

Recently, Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen confirmed that Flash 10.1 on Android will arrive soon. Most likely the said feature would be announced on Android 2.2 at Google I/O event. Even, Adobe rolled-out sign up for the Flash 10.1 beta for Android.

Multicolor trackball notifications will also make its way to Android 2.2 firmware. Nexus One houses only white color to bring a notification, despite the RGB LED available. But lilHermit of xda-devs unlocked it to change the color of Trackball or jogball as soon as you receive any SMS or MMS. The said feature was present during Nexus One official launch, but the feature was put on hold for the final Android 2.1 build.

Most likely all users will receive Android 2.1 updates before the rollout of Android 2.2 firmware eventually leaving them again waiting anxiously for 2.2 update. Many handsets like HTC Dream and Magic may not support android 2.2 since they only have limited RAM of 192 MB.

Google I/O event, which is scheduled to start on May 19th, is going to unravel certain interesting facts and feature details about Android 2.2 firmware. What features do you think will be available to the final cut of android 2.2?
