China Unicom Offers to Jailbreak iPhone 4, iPad 3G with Free Cases at Purchase

Being the sole and official authorized carrier for selling Apple iPhone, iPod Touch and other iDevices, China Unicom is helping their customers to jailbreak iPhone 4, iPad 3G, convert SIM Card to Micro-SIM, install 10 popular apps from Cydia and a free case on every new purchase of iPhone 4 and iPad 3G. Don’t you believe? At least an advertising campaign says so! Notably, Apple does not support jailbreaking iPhone and neither asks its vendors to provide unauthorized services despite being legalized by the USA government.

By sheer serendipity, these promotional advertising banners were spotted by a Chinese citizen at a China Unicom store located in Dongguan where the store was selling iPhone 4 32GB model with no contract at whopping price of $6980 yuan ($1025 USD, Hong Kong is cheapest) including jailbreaking iPhone 4, installing Cydia apps, free case, etc. The advert reads: “Support Service: Free SIM-trimming, jailbreak, installation of more than 10 hot apps”.

Currently, Apple is shipping its iPhone 4 on iOS 4.0.2 and iPad on iOS 3.2.2 pre-installed for which no jailbreak solution is available. It is yet to be determined, how would China Unicom jailbreak iOS 4.0.2 or 3.2.2? Maybe the services are for old models.

Ironically, these posters are not showing up in all of China Unicom stores. It seems that without being afraid of cancellation of license or penalty from Apple, the promotional advertising banners were tweaked a little bit to attract customers. Unethical sales and marketing gimmick! What do you say?
