Will Twitter takeover an existing twitter app for android (Seesmic or Twitdroid like Tweetie for iPhone)? Absolutely No! Twitter has announced its official twitter client for android smartphones and has named it as “Twitter for android”.

The official twitter client came after CEO Evan Williams earlier announced at Twitter’s Chirp conference that the microblogging network would be launching an official Android app shortly. Evan also said in an announcement that Twitter will be launching its own URL shortener. Red Alert for bit.ly!

Twitter for Android lets you share any link or photo to Gmail, Twitter, PicSay and Picasa, quickly access your timeline with the home screen widget, view a tweet location on a map, and see your friend’s latest tweet in your phonebook, GoogleTalk list or any application that uses Android’s QuickContact bar. The Twitter for Android app is available for phones running Android 2.1 which is certainly not available to most of us.

Recently, Twitter acquired Atebits in an undisclosed price resulting into the acquisition of Tweetie which is the iPhone’s most popular Twitter client and coined it “Twitter for iPhone”. Few days later Twitter announced that RIM’s new Twitter app would be an “official Twitter app” for the device which led to the conclusion that Twitter will acquire an existing android app.

The whole story of developing official app started by Fred Wilson, a Twitter board member and an investor with Union Square Ventures. He said in a blog post that instead of fixing holes in Twitter’s product, twitter should build its own “killer apps”. The statement shook the whole third party developer community. Soon after, Twitter acquired popular twitter client “Tweetie” instead of developing its own twitter app that would otherwise take time.
Now, Twitter have its own official version of twitter client for the three major/growing smartphone platforms like iPhone, Blackberry and Android. We may soon see unofficial Twitter mobile clients like Echofon, TweetDeck, Twitdroid or Seesmic packing their bags.
