How to Tether Motorola DROID Phone

by Jeffry McDowell on December 11, 2009

Tethering rooted Android Devices is easy with open source app android-wifi-tether. The app allows you to tether HTC Dream/Magic/Hero Samsung Galaxy I7500. Recently, Motorola DROID was rooted for direct access to the file system on Android 2.0 Rom & Android 2.0.1 OTA firmware. The free WiFi Tether app “android-wifi-tether” for Android is being worked on for DROID support, as we can now root the DROID. If you do not want to root your android device, then you can use PdaNet to tether Motorola DROID.

pdanet_Tether

PdaNet for Android is an Android application & does not require root access or hacking of system files of your phone’s firmware. It provides you with fast & secure Tethering and at the same time USB mode allows you to charge your Android device.

PdaNet Tethers Android Phones with Laptops easily providing you with full Internet access supporting both USB Tether and Bluetooth DUN. Once tethered, your Motorola DROID phone can then connect to 3G data, WiFi, or even through VPN and PdaNet will share the connection with your laptop or computer.

How to use PdaNet to Tether Android Phones

Step #1 Download PDANet for Android v 2.14 (Full version costs $29) and USB Driver. Once trial expires, you can continue using PdaNet for free. Free version now supports all but https.

Step #2 Follow online instructions & install PDANet for Android on your desktop and Phone. During installation, it will automatically install the USB driver, if it doesn’t, then download USB Driver and install it.

Step #3 Enabled “USB Debugging” and connect your Droid phone to the USB and “switch on” your phone, launch the PDANet software. Click on “Turn PdaNet On“.

Step #4 Go to your computer and hit “Connect” on the PDANet software on your system tray icon for PdaNet. You have Tethered Droid successfully; enjoy the High speed wireless Internet.

Additional Steps for Bluetooth Tethering

Step #5 To enable Bluetooth Tethering, just make a Bluetooth connection between your Motorola DROID or any Android device with your PC.

Step #6 Now, create a Dial-up Networking Connection (DUN).

Step #7 When prompted for modem, select the Bluetooth Modem Driver.

Step #8 If prompted for a username and password, select you don’t want to use.

Step #9 If prompted for a phone number. Use “123″ as the phone number.

Note: Mac or Linux users can install PdaNet via Android Market that supports Bluetooth DUN only. The internet connection speed may not be fast as on your computer because Bluetooth port normally has a baud rate limit. PdaNet is working hard to support USB Tether for Mac and has been lined up for future release. Presently, Mac users need to run PdaNet under VMWare or Parallel.

USB Tethering for Android Device (Mac OS users only)

Step #1 Navigate to (System Settings -> Applications -> check Unknown Sources; Development -> check USB debugging) to enable USB debugging and 3rd-party app installation.

Step #2 Install azilink on your Android phone.

Step #3 Install Android SDK to get the adb tool. You can add the SDK’s tools folder to your PATH or copy adb to /usr/local/bin/ folder.

Step #4 Install Tunnelblick (Tunnelblick 3.0b22 preferably. Just copy it to your Applications folder, and run it to set up your system.

Step #5 Get the activate/deactivate shell script from #701122 – Pastie and save it as, for example, ~/azilink.sh

Step #6 Make the script runnable (e.g. “chmod 744 ~/azilink.sh” at the Terminal)

Step #7 Run azilink on your android phone and check the box to start the service.

Step #8 Run the script (”~/azilink.sh”) on your Mac from Terminal.

Step #9 Press ctrl-c to enable tethering on DROID or any other Android device.

Don't have Ubuntu? Download it (for free – legally of course) from ubuntu.com.. You can then install it inside Windows with wubi and you'll be able to then reboot into it.

Cheers!
