iPhone 4: Retina Display, Gyroscope, Video Editing & More

Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Inc. has finally unveiled the most awaiting smartphone “Phone 4″ and opened a Pandora box with tons of exciting features in his keynote address at WWDC 10 (World Wide Developers Conference). Steve quoted saying –  ”This is beyond a doubt the most precise things, one of the most beautiful things we’ve ever made. Thinnest smartphone on the planet.” Let’s have a quick snapshot of features that iPhone 4 has to offer.

Features of Next-gen iPhone 4

  • Glass on front and rear with stainless steel running around the side.
  • 9.3mm thick, 24% thinner than current iPhone.
  • 5-megapixel Camera with LED flash on back.
  • Backside illuminated sensor.
  • 1.75 micron pixel size in sensor. 5x digital zoom in camera app and tap to focus with LED flash. Camera records HD video! 720p at 30fps.
  • Tap to focus video with built-in video editing. One-click sharing. LED flash can stay on during video recording. Record, edit, and share HD video right on your phone.
  • 3.5″ display, same size, 960×640.
  • iPhone 4 powered by Apple A4 chip.
  • Bigger battery: 40% more talk time. 7 hours talk time. 6 hours of 3G browsing, 10 hours of WiFi browsing, 10 hours of video. 40 hours of music. 300 hours of standby.
  • External buttons, volume up and down, mute, front facing camera. Micro-sim tray.
  • 32GB of storage, quadband HSDPA/HSUPA
  • Mic, 30 pin connector, and speaker at the bottom.
  • Top has headphone jack, second mic for noise cancellation and sleep/wake button.
  • The stainless steel band is the primary structure of the phone, “Brilliant engineering, uses band as part of Antenna system.” One side is Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, other is UMTS and GSM.
  • Uses stainless steel for strength, uses glass for optical quality and scratch resistance.
  • Retina Display – It is a new display technology, dramatically increases pixel density. 4x as many in same amount of space. “Really really sharp text.” iPhone 4 sports Retina Display of 326 ppi. 300 ppi is limit of the human retina when held 10-12 inches away from the eye. 326 ppi. 800:1 contrast ratio also 4x better than 3GS. Uses IPS technology for superb color and wide viewing angle. Retina Display has 78% of the pixels of an iPad right in the palm of your hand.
  • Capable of 7.2mbit down 5.8mbit up once carriers support that speed.
  • Dual mics, 802.11n.
  • Gyroscope: Gyro + accelerometer = 6 axis motion sensing. Gyro joins 4 other sensors, accelerometer, compass, proximity and ambient light sensors.

    “This may simply be from that time frame when all the factories in China were not clean and many were putting malware onto stuff, not intentionally but because the hygiene wasn’t good,” he said in an interview on Monday.

    “Who knows where the server (hosting the software) is located,” he said. “It could have been exposed to the unclean conditions that were rampant there.”
