Unlocking iPhone 4 with Gevey Turbo SIM Possible?

by Jeffry on March 16, 2011

There’s a new iPhone 4 unlocking method, which achieves a full unlock using only a Turbo SIM card. Gevey Turbo SIM is claiming to unlock your iPhone 4 on baseband like 02.10.04 and 03.10.01, for which the whole world is waiting anxiously.

What is Gevey Turbo SIM

It is actually a thin card that squeezes in alongside your usual SIM card to run the exploit. It spoofs your AT&T IMSI  number and authentication key (Ki) supplied by the SIM card to the network for misguiding the iPhone, then your card IMSI is used for network connection. It can then be used on any mobile network (like T-Mobile) with which they are technically compatible.

TurboSIM copies the information from your AT&T SIM card and then switch your AT&T SIM for your carrier SIM. This allows the Turbo SIM to append on your carrier SIM, and apparently gives you full calling, SMS capabilities. It does not require any complicated hardware or card readers. It is important to note that Apple could easily invalidate this hack with a firmware update.

Is Turbo SIM Method Legit or Fake?

This iPhone unlocking method is not new and carries a history behind it. In 2007, an Australian iPhone hacker ozbimmer successfully unlocked iPhone using TurboSIM and managed to get an iPhone to work on the Telstra network. Few months later, on February 8, 2008, Geohot developed the free software unlock for the iPhone’s then Bootloader Version 4.6. Since then, most of the iPhone users rely on Geohot or iPhone Dev team for unlocking it.

We may now safely assume that Gevey Turbo SIM might unlock your iPhone 4 as well. The team even posted a video, demonstrating full iPhone 4 unlocking on baseband 02.10.04 and 03.10.01.

Reactions of Hacker Community

It’s POSITIVE! iPhone hacker Musclenerd of iPhone Dev Team has not completely denied the credibility of Gevey’s SIM. According to him, in 2007, Turbo SIM was a nice programmable SIM interposer board with a long/mixed history with iPhone. Unlike software unlocking method like ultrasn0w, these SIM interposers can take advantage of bugs in SIM Toolkit (STK). He concluded saying that hardware SIM interposers can’t use any bugs that we can, and we can’t use any bugs they can.

Buy Gevey Turbo SIM or wait for Ultrasn0w?

Unlike ultrasn0w which comes free, this piggyback SIM card will cost you anything between $20 to $40. Currently, iPhone Dev Team is hard at work to bruteforce crack the unique 40-bit NCK key on the device by coming weekend, which can then be used to unlock iPhone 4 permanently. We would advise you to wait for Dev Team’s statement before buying it.

will this work for AT&T Locked iphone 4, because i have seen in the video, on the menu -> settings -> Generals -> about -> Carries – says something different as carrier Lab 8.0 instead of AT&T 8.0 where all the AT&T locked iphone,

and its show’s like that before inserting the Gevey Turbo SIM as on video.. personally im happy if this works perfect on all the countries rather than demonstrated on this video as china ;)

    Cheers

i always wondered why Apple had to introduce the micro sim card. could it be to avoid the use of turbo sim cards which are the same size as standard sim cards? there is really no conceivable or convincing reason for reducing the sim card size. or no?

  • Paaniiquaye

it appears to come with a customized sim card tray. i guess we have to look at it as part of the sim card tray and hence a permanent feature

  • Fantasys_boy
