HTC EVO 4G Gets Android 2.2 Froyo Update, But be Warned!

by Brian on July 31, 2010

Your wait ends here! You can now install android 2.2 Frozen Yogurt (Froyo) on your EVO 4G. Official Android 2.2 Froyo update for Sprint EVO 4G is now available for download (from HTC here). However, official OTA update will commence from August 3 instead of in December 2010 making Sprint the first carrier to upgrade their devices to Android 2.2 Froyo.

It is important to note that this is not a final build and some features may not work flawlessly. HTC has been warning against installing the update as this is not the one which HTC will be rolloing out after few days. But, keeping warnings aside, guys over androidcentral managed to port froyo ROM on EVO 4G and found the device speedy. Well, we already know that the Android 2.2 ROM is much faster than Android 2.1 and almost 2 to five times faster than the android 2.1 eclair. So, being speedy is not surprising at all. Check out the video of HTC EVO running froyo below:

Those who have installed CyanogenMod Froyo build for HTC EVO, or XDA devs android 2.2 custom ROM for EVO must now flash the official version of android 2.2 froyo build. Believe me, the build seems to be almost final one. Those who cannot hold their appetite, must download and install official build of Android 2.2 on the Sprint Evo 4G handset now!

How to manually Flash Updated Android 2.2 on HTC EVO 4G

The update is the same as the OTA update. Just download it, put it on the SD card named update.zip, launch recovery (power on with volume down held), press power and volume up when the warning triangle icon appears then select ‘apply update.zip’. Once the process is completed, reboot your HTC EVO.

and why is there a ‘force stop’ option for some??

Why do I not receive the option to move several different apps to my SD card? Just wish I could put em all on there. My Evo is responding about 10 seconds late to every action right now and it is only 1 week old :/

Storing applications on external storage is crap in froyo. I could only move 3 to 4 apps . There is no use of that feature. HTC or android should rectify this issue.

I think the 3.25.651.1 is the original leak, before it was found on HTC's site, though I could be wrong. Anyways, installing either won't cause a problem, since you should be able to either OTA to the official release or install it the same way manually.

I downloaded and installed Froyo but I ended up with Build 3.26.651.3 how did you guys only end up with 3.25.651.1???

Did they tweak the download? I didn't download mine until around 3 in the afternoon before HTC pulled it…
