i have a 3gs as well with 3.1.2 JB with blackrain and i tried to upgrade it to 4.0 …i got an error 1600… i tried tto downgrade again and couldn't do it… the phone is now locked.i looked at the other forums and sadly found out that i'll have to wait for a new hack to come out… no idea how long that's gonna take…

Upgrade your iTunes to 9.2 and remember to put iPhone in DFU mode before you restore with iTunes. Hold Home+Power then release Power Button after 10 seconds while still Holding Home button.
