Galaxy S Root hack Ported On US Variants [T-Mobile Vibrant and AT&T Captivate]

by Jeffry on July 14, 2010

Few days back Guys over samdroid rooted Samsung Galaxy S running Android 2.1 successfully providing full access to its system files. There were speculations whether US version of Galaxy S (T-Mobile Vibrant and AT&T Captivate, Sprint Epic 4G and Verizon Fascinate) can be rooted using the same method or not. But now genius developers over xda-devs have successfully rooted the US versions of the Samsung Galaxy S (T-Mobile Vibrant and AT&T Captivate) with some minor tweaking.

The process reportedly requires users to flash an update.zip file providing you with a /system/bin/su access from AOSP (that is, you can only use it from adb shell). We may soon expect the community to root Sprint’s Epic 4G and Verizon’s Fascinate before their official launch. Just follow the steps listed below in order to root your Samsung Vibrant and Samsung Captivate.

How to Root T-Mobile US branded Vibrant and generic Galaxy S models

Step 1 : Download SGH-959 Root Update.zip and rename to update.zip

Step 2 : Put update.zip on the INTERNAL SD memory (/sdcard if you are using a 3rd party file browser, the root folder if you are using the ‘Files’ app that comes with the Vibrant)

Step 3 : From command prompt, enter adb reboot recovery

Step 4 : In Recovery menu select ‘Reinstall Packages’ (use vol_down then power to select). Phone will reboot and you have

  • su+Superuser
  • busybox (/system/xbin/busybox)

so i tried to use this method to root my vibrant, and i got most of the way through, but when i want to reinstall packages, it gives me an error “cant open /sdcard/update.zip (no such file or directory) installation aborted”

i d/l the zip file from the link, which dl’ed onto the files – download folder and i moved it to my “sd” folder and renamed it update.zip, what did i do wrong?
