iPhone 4G / HD Reviewed in Depth: Images and Videos

by Jeffry on April 19, 2010

iPhone 4G HD images posted by Engadget earlier has now appeared to be the real images of possible next-generation iPhone that had reportedly been found on the floor of a San Jose bar camouflaged inside an iPhone 3G case. Their claim was further authenticated by a leaked iPad image which they got it from one of the source at Apple test Lab, before the iPad Launch. The leaked iPad image clearly shows the fourth-generation iPhone prototype which resembles the one which they published earlier.

The leaked iPhone model is packed with glass backing and Daring Fireball’s John Gruber statement further supports the legitimacy of the said iPhone prototype model after he dug up a 2006 Apple patent application on a ceramic enclosure for handheld devices. Technology pundit John Gruber added that Apple has indeed lost a prototype iPhone and they want it back:

So I called around, and I now believe this is an actual unit from Apple — a unit Apple is very interested in getting back. I am not certain that this looks like the actual production unit Apple in tends to ship to consumers.

Gizmodo got their hands on the fourth-generation iPhone prototype but unfortunately, was not able to see the phone reportedly running iPhone 4.0 firmware in action, as it appears to have been remotely disabled by Apple. But Gizmodo has exhaustively reviewed its hardware and posted some images and videos of purported iPhone 4G.

What’s new in possible iPhone 4G

  • Front-facing video chat camera
  • Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
  • Camera flash
  • Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
  • Improved display. It’s unclear if it’s the 960×460 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the “Connect to iTunes” screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS. It is now impossible to discern individual pixels.
  • What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
  • Split buttons for volume
  • Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

What’s changed in possible iPhone 4G

  • The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound
  • An aluminum border going completely around the outside
  • Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution)
  • Everything is more squared off
  • 3 grams heavier
  • 16% Larger battery
  • Internals components are shrunken, miniaturized and reduced to make room for the larger battery

iPhone 4G/HD Video in Action

Till now, Apple did not provided front face camera option in their iPhone offerings. iPhone 4G now have second front face camera, Flash, better back camera, better battery life and another microphone for better voice clarity. Users now have enough reasons to upgrade their iPhone handset to next generation iPhone.

Apple is speculated to introduce the fourth generation iPhone at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, on June 22 along with the CDMA version of the said device. If this is a real iPhone 4G or iPhone HD model which is going to be unveiled by Apple this Summer, then most likely, someone (the person who lost the iPhone 4G prototype model at San Jose Bar) at Apple might lose his job on Monday.
