According to Channel 4 UK: iPhone Jailbreak = App Piracy!

by Jeffry on September 4, 2010

Channel 4 in UK telecasted an episode on iPhone Jailbreak at prime time and it was shocking to know that the tech correspondent Benjamin Cohen was not acquainted about why do people prefers jailbreaking and what advantages does it provides. Channel 4′s facts regarding Jailbreakme and piracy were absolutely incorrect and misleading. Hit the complete video after the break!

According to the reporter, jailbreak carries piracy tag. He doesn’t know about the fact that the creators of Jailbreakme don’t condone the use of piracy. And even when you jailbreak your phone, you still won’t be able to use pirated copies. Jailbreaking has nothing to do with piracy, there are pirates that use the jailbreak for illegal reasons but most of us jailbreak just to have complete control over what our phones look like, how they function and the ability to install apps from places other than the app store. Mind you! If it was piracy, Jailbreaking would never be stamped legal by USA government!

People are now just going to jailbreak because Channel 4 have promoted that it carries free apps which is incorrect and piracy tag was indeed awful. Poorly researched segment on iPhone jailbreaking and misleading too. What do you say? Any thought?

Not exactly – apparently Mr Cohen was well informed but the editor cut out the rest of the jailbreaking reasons:

ScottishDan: @benjamincohen Why is this only making news now? Jailbreaking and pirate apps has been possible for nearly 3 years now. It’s not news

benjamincohen: @ScottishDan it’s a trending piece. It’s also a bank holiday so time for a feature

ScottishDan: @benjamincohen the article made out that pirated apps was the primary reason for jailbreak which is simply not the case for most users

benjamincohen: @eugeneniemand @ScottishDan @Zombieheadcrab The jailbraker did say he does it to customise his iphone and download non Apple approved apps

ScottishDan: @benjamincohen he did indeed, however it appeared more of an afterthought. No wonder JBing gets a bad name, the only time media covers it, it glosses over the good and focuses on the bad. TBH if Apple wasn’t so restrictive and controlling JBing wouldn’t even exist

benjamincohen: @ScottishDan Look it’s hard to get everything into the piece. And I had the other jailbreaking reasons taken out by editor
