Jailbreak iPhone OS 4.0 Firmware Easily with Redsn0w 0.9.5

by Jeffry on April 15, 2010

iPhone Dev team has released the first working jailbreak tool Redsn0w 0.9.5 to jailbreak iPhone OS 4.0 Beta 1. Earlier, the same team demoed Jailbroken iPhone OS 4.0 Running VNC Server. This is a beta release of redsn0w and has been targeted at developers of jailbroken apps which use the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that we’ve been using since the 2.x days.

Users might face critical issues with various jailbroken apps in the 4.0beta1 environment. Few days back iPhone Dev Team demoed the jailbroken iPhone 4.0 running “Veency”, instead of MobileTerminal.app, which is broken. This beta redsn0w 0.9.5 will give a wake-up call to the developers of such jailbroken apps so that they can fix their software before the general public install iPhone OS 4.0 on iPhone and iPod Touch.

It is important to note that the redsn0w 0.9.5 works only if your iPhone or iPod touch has been upgraded to the stock 4.0beta1 IPSW from Apple, which contains a baseband update. If you installed that IPSW, you’ve already lost the carrier unlock until the next planned release of ultrasn0w and blacksn0w.

Being targeted for JB app developers, redsn0w 0.9.5 does not perform hactivation. You’ll need a properly-registered developer UDID with Apple to get past the activation screen. This is the reason that the team failed to release Windows version of redsn0w 0.9.5 beta.

Steps to Jailbreak iPhone 3G on iPhone OS 4 Beta1

Developers for jailbroken apps can follow the simple steps listed below to jailbreak their iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 4 Beta1.

  1. Download iPhone OS 4 Beta (leaked version) for iPhone 3G
  2. Update your iPhone3G to iPhone1,2_4.0_8A230m_Restore.ipsw
  3. Activate your iPhone3G with iTunes and your developer UDID
  4. Launch the beta redsn0w 0.9.5
  5. Select your stock iPhone1,2_4.0_8A230m_Restore.ipsw file (you’ve already used this to update your iPhone3G to 4.0beta1)
  6. Select “Install Cydia” and click “Next”.
  7. Use DFU mode to install the jailbreak.
  8. When your iPhone3G comes back up, you’ll notice Cydia has a blank white icon. You’ll also notice Cydia has no sources.
  9. Go to the Sources panel and add this repo: http://apt.saurik.com/cydia-3.7. Make sure that you have a carrier or wifi signal.
  10. After Cydia restarts, its real logo now appears, and the standard sources should be ready to use.

It is also important to note that the baseband of your iPhone will still be at 05.13 from the stock 4.0beta1, but iPhone OS 3.1.2 and iPhone OS 3.1.3 will work fine with it. The current carrier unlocks will not.

After jailbreaking you might want to use iPhone 4.0 multitasking on your iPhone 3G. Just head over here in order to enable multitasking on iPhone 4.0 beta1 firmware. If you want to downgrade to iPhone 3.1.3 firmware from iPhone 4.0 beta1 then follow our detailed guide listed here.
